Anticipatory bail is a direction that, if you are arrested in a particular case, you will be released on bail. It is sought before any arrest, when you have a genuine reason to believe you may be arrested for a non-bailable offence. It is now governed by Section 482 BNSS (earlier Section 438 CrPC).
Once a person is arrested, anticipatory bail is no longer available — so it is important to act quickly.

Anticipatory bail is a direction that a person will be released on bail if arrested. Since 1 July 2024 it is governed by Section 482 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which replaced Section 438 of the CrPC.
An application can be made to the Sessions Court or to the Allahabad High Court (Lucknow Bench). The Sessions Court is usually approached first.
